Exchange 2013 Cumulative Updates - Failed Installations

After spending a large part of the weekend rebuilding an Exchange server, we worked with Microsoft and found out about a major change in the way Exchange 2013 handles updates. • Installation failure recovery – In the unlikely event installing a CU fails and is unrecoverable, re-installation of the server will be necessary. No loss of mailbox or queue data should occur even in the unlikely event of an installation failure

Lesson learned: be prepared for a failure that occurs in small Exchange 2013 environments while updating. In this case we had a single server deployed and were forced to rebuild and recover from scratch. Luckily our Exchange team was able to complete the work in just a few hours, and the patching (and failure) was done after hours.
